Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how Fabric Pattern House works, our ethical approach, and how to make the most of our guides.

🌿About Fabric Pattern House
What is Fabric Pattern House and who is it for?
Fabric Pattern House is an editorial travel platform dedicated to documenting the world's lesser-known villages, hidden cultural regions, and off-grid destinations. It's for travellers who want depth over convenience — people who would rather have a real conversation with a village elder than wait in line for a famous attraction.
Is Fabric Pattern House free to use?
Our basic destination pages, cultural stories, and blog are completely free. We offer an optional premium subscription that provides access to full village guides with GPS waypoints, seasonal condition updates, and our researchers' personal contact recommendations within each community.
Where are you based and how large is the team?
Our editorial office is in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. We have a core team of 8 editors and a global network of 80+ field researchers who live in or near the communities they document. We operate across 62 countries as of 2026.
📍Our Destinations
How do you select which destinations to feature?
Every destination must meet three criteria: it must be genuinely underexplored (not already featured extensively in mainstream travel media), it must have community consent for documentation, and it must be visited by our team at least twice before publication. We reject around 60% of submissions from our researchers if they don't meet these standards.
Do you ever remove destinations from the site?
Yes — we have removed 7 destinations since our founding when visitor numbers caused harm to the community or environment. We conduct annual impact assessments at all featured locations. If a community asks us to remove their listing, we do so immediately without question.
Can I suggest a hidden destination I've found?
Absolutely — this is how we find many of our best destinations. Please use the contact form and select "Destination Suggestion." Include as much context as possible about the location, your connection to it, and why you believe it deserves documentation. We read every suggestion, though we cannot respond to all of them.
🗺Travel Planning
Are your village guides suitable for first-time independent travellers?
Some are, many are not. Every guide is clearly rated for difficulty of access, required experience level, and infrastructure availability. Some destinations are genuinely remote and require prior expedition experience. Please read the difficulty ratings carefully before planning. If in doubt, start with our "Easy Access" rated guides.
Do you offer organized tours or trip planning services?
No — we are an editorial platform, not a tour operator. We believe independent travel, done responsibly, creates better outcomes for both visitors and communities. We can recommend ethical local guides and community-run tourism programs within individual destination guides, but we don't arrange or sell travel packages.
How current is the information in your guides?
Each guide shows a "Last Updated" date. We aim to update all guides annually, with priority given to guides where seasonal conditions, access routes, or community situations have changed significantly. Road and boat conditions especially can change without notice in remote areas — always verify current access before departing.
🤝Ethics & Responsibility
How do you get community consent for your documentation?
Our researchers begin with community introduction meetings — often facilitated by local contacts or NGOs — where they explain Fabric Pattern House's mission, potential visitor numbers, and how the information will be used. Communities then choose whether, and how, to participate. Many ask for specific content to be excluded; we always comply.
Why don't you publish GPS coordinates for sensitive locations?
Because public GPS coordinates on digital platforms can dramatically and rapidly increase visitor numbers. Several communities we documented early in our history saw visitor numbers triple within 6 months of publication. We learned from this. Coordinates are now only shared with premium subscribers who have agreed to our responsible travel charter.
Do communities benefit financially from being featured?
We donate 10% of all subscription revenue to rural community development projects in featured destinations. Additionally, many communities have asked us to include links to their own community-run tourism initiatives, which we always prioritize over commercial alternatives.
✍️Content & Research
Can I write for Fabric Pattern House?
We accept pitches from freelance writers and researchers who have deep personal knowledge of specific communities. We do not accept general travel writing or destination overviews. All contributors must have spent at least two weeks in the community they're writing about. Send pitches to hello@fabricpatternhouse.com with the subject "Editorial Pitch."
Do you accept sponsored content or press trips?
No, never. Our editorial independence is non-negotiable. All researchers fund their own travel, and no destination has ever paid for coverage. This is the foundation of our credibility — readers trust that we feature places because they deserve to be documented, not because someone paid us.
Practical Questions
I found incorrect information in a guide. How do I report it?
Please use the contact form and select "Village Guide Feedback." We take corrections very seriously — outdated or inaccurate information about remote destinations can have real safety consequences. We typically process corrections within 48 hours.
Can I use your photography or content in my own work?
All content on Fabric Pattern House is copyright protected. For editorial and non-commercial use, please contact us with a specific request. Commercial licensing requests are handled case-by-case. We always consult the photographer and, where applicable, the community whose images are being licensed.
